“Two waterfalls, one tropical walk”
An easy guided hike for everyone, leading to two waterfalls hidden in the mountains of Afareaitu, surrounded by Moorea’s lush tropical vegetation.
The guided hike to the Putoa waterfalls begins along a pleasant tree-lined path leading gradually into the mountains. Tropical vegetation surrounds the trail, with lush plants, shaded forest and occasional views of Afareaitu’s green mountain scenery.
Much of the trail remains naturally shaded, making this a particularly refreshing excursion. At a fork, two separate paths lead towards the waterfalls.
The first waterfall is reached along a more direct trail with a slightly steeper approach. Hidden against the mountainside, it offers a peaceful introduction to the wild atmosphere of the valley.
The second path follows a gentler route towards a larger waterfall. At its base, a natural freshwater pool offers the opportunity for a refreshing swim, depending on conditions and your preferences.
Relatively uncrowded, the Putoa waterfalls reveal another side of Moorea: a lush, mountainous island where tropical forest, fresh water and peaceful surroundings come together away from the busier coastal areas.
This hike is accessible to everyone and involves very little elevation gain. Some sections of the trail can nevertheless become wet or slippery, especially after rainfall and near the waterfalls.

I love this hike for its simplicity and peaceful atmosphere. Most of the walk is shaded and surrounded by tropical vegetation, with the air becoming noticeably cooler as we approach the waterfalls. Each trail has its own character, and swimming beneath the second waterfall is a wonderful experience when conditions allow.
